Don’s research has revolved around the metabolic syndrome in overweight children and adolescents. He has also examined blood vessel structure and function and the metabolic syndrome in adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Don, along with Dr. Aaron Kelly, runs the Vikings Fitness Playbook program. He is director of the Laboratory of Integrative Human Physiology, member of the University of Minnesota Cancer Center, senior member of the Nutrition Graduate Program, and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics.

Don recently received the Marty and Jack Rossmann Faculty Development Award and was recently named a fellow of the American Heart Association, Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism. He holds a Master’s from Ball State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia-Athens in exercise and applied physiology.
